Frontpage contains a number of features that allow you to either repair broken hyperlinks or remove those items that no longer have a link to them. It is very easy to forget to remove a file that has been replaced by an improved item.

To access the features look at the bottom of the main screen and click on Reports, this gives you a list of Reports. The most useful are the ‘Unlinked files’, files that are not linked to a hyperlink and the ‘Broken hyperlinks’

To use the information in say the ‘Unlinked files’ report right click on the open report, click on ‘Copy report’ then paste into Word, they are in the form of a table. As always you cannot always take the information at face value, before printing the list have a quick look at the document occasionally something appears there that should not be deleted, have a look down the column titled ’Links to’, they should all be zero. In the trial one that I have just looked at there is an item with 1 links to and 45 links from. Best we don’t delete it! Down at the bottom of the page are all the ‘Thumbs.db’ they are part of the Windows system and should not be deleted or published.

Having edited the document put it into ‘Landscape’ and reduced the font to 8pt print it.

As you work through it deleting files, (I find it easier working in ‘My computer’ with ‘View’ set to icons, it gives you a better picture of what is being deleted than working in FP) be aware that the report lists the files in alphabetical order no matter which folder they are in. Look down the second column and mark where it changes folders, could save some work replacing files wrongly deleted. The other thing to watch is that image files can have the same name but could be either .jpg or .gif.

Work through the unlinked files first it may cure some of the hyperlink problems.

Don’t forget that the report applies to the site on your computer not the ones on the Netlinc server, therefore having deleted the files from your machine in a particular folder have a look at the site files and delete the unmatched ones.
