Uploading to web site

Uploading or publishing to the web site is the most complicated step of the process, not because it is difficult but because there is a lot of information available on the screen that needs to be understood. Previously you could you can only upload to the Netlinc server from school but you can now do it externally.

Go to 'File-Publish site'.

The screen you get will depend on which site FP last published to, if you have published to the site earlier in the session it will open showing the site on the web server on the RH side of the split screen and the site on the computer on the LH side with the Folder list of the site on the extreme left..

If you have not published to the site in the current session, it will open with a dialogue  box asking you which site to publish to, it will look like this.

Screen print 3

The box should default to the above situation with the FTP radio button selected and ftp://ftp-hosted.netlinc.org.uk as the remote Web site location. If it does not make the entries. Click on OK.

The centre box will change to

Screen print 4

The box should default to the Name: nettjweb and you will need to enter the password then click OK. The centre box will go and you will have the Local Web site (the one on the computer) on the LH side of the slit screen and the Remote Web site (the one on the server) on the RH side. If you look at the screen print above you can see from these two screens that something is not right as the two screens should be similar. Because the last site that was published to in this session was this support site located on the ntl servers, that is the Remote site in the RH half of the screen, (the one that we are publishing to) that the program has opened. You should check which sites are open as they are identified just above the split screens. having ensured that you are uploading between the correct sites, the screen should look like this.

Screen print 5

Looking at Screen print 5 it can be seen that the Local Web site is the computer and the Remote Web site is on the server. It also shows that there is a question marks against the 'Uploading to web site' pages on both the 'Local' and 'Remote' sites. This is because FP has detected that one of them has been modified, it has 'Conflict' in the 'Status' column and the date and time the changes were made in the 'Modified, column, but FP is not sure which page is correct. It is useful to make a note of the pages you change so that you have a list of the pages that need uploading. Click on the page in the 'Local' site that you wish to upload and the arrows in between the screens will offer you a choice of either updating the 'Remote' site by clicking on the top arrow or if you are not sure which is the latest version of the file you can let FP compare the pages by using pair of arrows, this checks the two pages and gives you the dates and times when they were last modified. You can then upload the latest version. Whenever the arrows are used you will get a box appear that asks you to confirm the page replacement. At the bottom RH side of the screen there is the ability to publish all the changed pages from the Local to the 'Remote' site or vice versa. You can 'Sychronise' the sites if you have changed a lot of pages. Note that to sychronise the school site can take up to 30 minutes.

If you have added new pages or folders (and sometimes when you have just changed the page) when you go to 'Publish the site' the new pages will have an arrow instead of the question mark, click on the page and then the relevant arrow to upload the page.

You can see 'Mismatched' in the 'Status' column, this will occur when either a folder or page has been deleted or added to the 'Local' site and has to be either deleted from or added to the 'Remote' site.
