Working with images.

There are three things that you need to remember when using images on a web site:

1.  Any images you use on a site must be on the web usually on the site you are working on.

2.   Set the image size to about 800 x 600 pixels which fills the screen without the need to scroll. When adjusting the resolution set to no more than 80dpi.

3.   Prepare the images as above and put them into the subject folder with a name relevant to the subject on the site before you start  building the photo gallery.

You can achieve the first two in a number of ways. You can use your usual imaging software or if you use MS Office 2003 it has MS Office Picture Management which has a built in picture compressor, but this has the limitation of producing a rather small image (448 x 336 pixels) it overwrites the original image and you can only work on one image at a time. A more useful tool is the re-sizer tool included in Windows XP Powertools, download from http://tinyurl.com/36n . As it is integrated into Windows all you have to do, having installed the program is to select the image or images, right click, select 'resize', this will offer a choice of sizes, select required size click OK and a modified image is produced and re-named to reflect the size chosen. the original image is retained.

To Put Images on a Site:

Prepare the images, by cropping, re-naming them with a name relevant to the subject and re-sizing. When naming the images don't forget no capitals no spaces.

Create a folder (see  Folders ) in the site to contain all the information related to the project, pages, buttons images etc and move        the prepared images into the folder.

Create a new page in the new folder (see  Adding new pages ) and type a title on the page now before you put the photographs onto it and create links to it from the appropriate menu.

To put the photographs on the page, with the page open and the cursor in the right place click on 'Insert, Web component, Photogallery'. this will open a series of boxes that allow you to choose the lay out of the gallery, insert text and the prepared photographs. When you click OK, a new sub folder is created in the Photogallery folder on the site. To edit the photogallery open the page that contains it (not the sub folder) and double click in the photograph layout, this will open the boxes to allow you to change the layout, add or delete photographs. You can also change the size of the thumbnails on the page. If the pictures are not displayed in the centre of the page, click on the pictures to select them, they then look like a negative! Then click on the 'Centre text' icon, this should move them into the centre of the page. Re-save the page.

You then have to upload the new page ( see Uploading ) and not forgetting to upload the revised page with the link to the new page.
